Most Texas houses are brick or stone on the walls that face the street, so siding here is gables, second stories, the older frame houses in the inner neighborhoods, and the back and sides of subdivisions where the builder put masonry on the front and fiber cement or vinyl everywhere else. That shapes the market. A siding company in Frisco or Katy does a lot of partial jobs, and a partial job lives or dies on matching what is already there.

Texas puts siding under the same storm law as roofing. The 2019 deductible law applies to anyone selling goods or services paid from a property insurance claim, so a siding contract on a hail claim of $1,000 or more carries the same notice a roofing contract does, and offering to eat the deductible is the same Class B misdemeanor. The claims are real. The 2016 hail season did more than $5 billion in damage, most of it in Dallas, Fort Worth, and San Antonio, and an adjuster who writes for the roof often writes for the north and west walls too.

Heat does the slow damage. Vinyl on a west wall in Dallas or San Antonio warps and chalks years before it would farther north, which is why fiber cement is the default upgrade here. On the coast the problem is water. Gulf humidity rots anything wood, and in the fourteen coastal counties and parts of Harris County a re-side has to be inspected and certified through the Texas Department of Insurance for the house to stay insurable with the state windstorm pool.

There is no state license for siding. Dallas registers contractors every year, San Antonio requires a Home Improvement Contractor registration with a background check, and Houston registers nobody. Texas adopts its residential code city by city, and outside the city limits most counties have no code to enforce at all. The season runs all year, and it is the August heat rather than the January cold that stops a crew.
