Hawaii's siding fights salt, sun, termites, and rain, and the answer on most of the islands is not siding at all. The Oahu tract house from the 1960s through the 1990s is single-wall construction, with the board itself as the wall, or a concrete masonry block wall. The trade is repair, paint, and the replacement of whatever the Formosan subterranean termite has eaten. Where siding goes on, it is fiber cement, because it takes the ultraviolet and the salt and the termites cannot eat it. The state code requires treated soil, a stainless steel barrier, or borate-treated wood under any structural lumber on a slab. Hilo gets 130 inches of rain a year, and there the siding job is a rainscreen job. Honolulu gets about 17 at the shore and 60 to 70 two miles inland. In Kailua and Hawaii Kai the salt air eats fasteners, so stainless is the spec.

Storms put siding on claims. Hurricane Iniki hit Kauai in September 1992 with 140 mile an hour sustained winds and gusts to 175, and the Lahaina fire of August 8, 2023 destroyed more than 2,200 structures and killed 102 people. Hawaii bars a contractor from promising to pay or rebate any part of an insurance deductible to win the job. A homeowner whose job will be paid for from a claim can rescind the contract until midnight of the fifth business day after signing. A sale made in the home carries three business days to cancel, said out loud and printed in ten-point bold.

A siding company is licensed by the Contractors License Board for any job over $1,500 or any job that needs a permit, with four years of experience, two exams, and $100,000 per person and $300,000 per accident in bodily injury coverage. The Contractors Recovery Fund pays a homeowner up to $12,500 per contract when a licensed contractor fails. Before the homeowner signs, the contractor explains every party's lien rights and the option to demand a bond, verbally and in detail, and puts the contract in writing.

The median Hawaii house dates from 1980, and the state is shrinking, down 2,132 people in the year to July 1, 2025, with Kapolei and the Ewa plain the one place growing.
