What window replacement costs in Michigan

Windows are priced each, by type and size. A double-hung or slider is the baseline; casements and awnings cost more for the crank hardware; bays and bows are small construction projects. Size is measured in United Inches, the height plus the width, and a large window costs about a fifth more than a medium one.

In Michigan the glass matters as much as the frame. A Low-E coating with argon fill is the standard here, and ENERGY STAR for the Northern climate zone is the label to ask for. Vinyl, premium vinyl and fiberglass are the three frame materials most homes choose between; wood is a special order, so pros price it on request.

For ten medium double-hung windows, installed:

  • Vinyl $7,600 to $13,400
  • Premium vinyl $9,750 to $17,150
  • Fiberglass $11,800 to $20,750

What moves the price

Type
Sliders and double-hungs are the baseline. Casements run about 30 percent more, and a bay or bow window is a small construction job with a roof of its own.
Size
Measured in United Inches, height plus width. Over 90 UI is large for a standard window and costs about a fifth more.
Frame material
Vinyl is the standard. Premium vinyl adds strength and color options for about a quarter more; fiberglass is about half again as much and the most stable in Michigan's temperature swings.
Full-frame or insert
An insert replacement keeps the existing frame and costs less. A full-frame replacement removes everything to the rough opening and is the right call when there's rot.
How many at once
Pros price a whole-house job lower per window than one or two. Grouping the work saves on trips and setup.

Questions homeowners ask

How much do replacement windows cost in Michigan?

For ten medium double-hung windows, vinyl runs $7,600 to $13,400 installed, premium vinyl $9,750 to $17,150, and fiberglass $11,800 to $20,750. Casements, bays and large sizes cost more each.

What is a United Inch?

The window's height plus its width, in inches. A 36 by 48 inch window is 84 United Inches, a medium size. Pros price by UI because it tracks the amount of glass and frame.

Vinyl, premium vinyl or fiberglass?

Vinyl is the standard and a good window. Premium vinyl adds reinforced frames and exterior colors. Fiberglass expands and contracts the least in Michigan's temperature swings and holds its seal longest.

What glass should I get in Michigan?

Double-pane with a Low-E coating and argon fill, rated ENERGY STAR for the Northern zone. Triple-pane is an upgrade worth considering on the north and west sides of the house.

Insert or full-frame replacement?

An insert fits inside the existing frame and costs less. A full-frame replacement removes the old frame and sill and is the right call when there's rot or the old frame is out of square.
