Tennessee's matching rule is the best thing that ever happened to a siding company. When hail cracks the vinyl on the north and west walls and the color has been discontinued, the state's insurance regulations say the insurer has to replace enough to give a reasonably uniform appearance, at no cost to the homeowner beyond the deductible. The Department of Commerce and Insurance has said in writing that this applies when the damaged and undamaged material can be seen from the same spot and no match is available. Two damaged walls become four, and the siding company that documents the color and the discontinuation is the one that writes the whole house.

The storms make the claims. The tornado outbreak of March 3, 2020 ran more than 60 miles through Middle Tennessee, and the one on December 9, 2023 destroyed 114 homes in Clarksville and damaged 857 more. Hail comes most springs and wind works panels loose every winter.

Humidity picks the material. Wood siding rots and the termites find it, so vinyl and fiber cement own the market. The subdivisions in Franklin, Spring Hill, and Murfreesboro are brick on the front and fiber cement or vinyl on the rest, so a lot of the work is partial, and the older frame houses in Nashville, Memphis, and Knoxville are where the full tear-offs are, with hardboard and wood under whatever went over it.

Licensing is by the dollar, with a county twist. A siding job of $25,000 or more takes a state license from the Board for Licensing Contractors, with exams and a financial statement behind it. A home improvement license covers jobs from $3,000 up, but only in nine counties, and those nine include Davidson, Shelby, Knox, Hamilton, and Rutherford, so a siding company in any of the big metros needs it. Tennessee gives the homeowner three business days to cancel any sale made in the home, so the contract carries a cancellation notice. The season runs nearly all year.
