South Dakota's siding is chosen by hail. The hailstone that fell on Vivian on July 23, 2010 measured eight inches across, the largest ever recorded in the United States, and a state that produces stones like that dents a west wall from eave to grade a few times a decade. Steel siding sells here, because it takes hail and a 75 mile an hour wind. South Dakota licenses no contractors. Every contractor holds a contractor's excise tax license and pays 2 percent of gross receipts on every job. Sioux Falls and Rapid City license contractors under their own codes, Sioux Falls with a construction supervisor exam, a bond, and insurance. There is no state contract law for a residential job, so the contract is whatever the siding company writes. There is no statewide residential building code. Sioux Falls and Rapid City build to the 2021 International Residential Code and inspect, and a re-side on a farm outside the cities is inspected by nobody.

The houses are the market. The median South Dakota house dates from 1979, and the growth is in the ring around Sioux Falls. Harrisburg grew from 6,845 to 10,405 people between 2020 and 2025, Tea grew 41 percent, and Rapid City added 5,600 and was the fastest-growing metro in the Midwest two years running. Sioux Falls gets about 25 inches of precipitation a year and Rapid City under 20, so the siding job is flashing and housewrap for wind-driven rain and snow, and the season runs from April into October.
