Rhode Island's houses are old, and that is the siding market. The median home is 59 years old, tied with Massachusetts for the second oldest stock in the country, and the triple-deckers of Providence, Pawtucket, and Woonsocket have had two or three skins already. Under the vinyl there is often aluminum from the 1960s, asbestos shingle from before that, and cedar clapboard under everything, so a full tear-off is the normal job, and a partial job lives or dies on matching what is already there. Rhode Island has no deductible statute and no roofing-specific claim law, so siding on a claim runs on the general rules, and the one that always applies is the door-to-door sales law.

Rhode Island registers every contractor at $500. A siding company carries a registration from the Contractors' Registration and Licensing Board, with a five-hour course before it and $500,000 in liability coverage naming the board behind it. A job sold at the kitchen table can be canceled until midnight of the third day after signing by registered or certified mail, and the contractors' law adds a separate three-day right for elderly homeowners.

The 2021 residential code has been mandatory for every permit since March 1, 2026, and the local building official inspects a re-side. The season runs from April into November. Vinyl gets brittle below freezing, and the Rhode Island winter stops a crew for months.
