North Dakota's siding is chosen by the wind and the cold. The derecho of May 12, 2022 ran 400 miles across the northern plains with 59 gusts of 75 miles an hour or more, an October 2024 windstorm put gusts above 70 across central North Dakota, and on January 13, 2024 Dickinson recorded a wind chill of 70 below. North Dakota licenses contractors through the Secretary of State for any job over $4,000, in four classes by the size of the job, with a certificate of liability insurance and no exam. The 2021 International Residential Code has been the state's code since January 1, 2023, with the cities enforcing it, and the frost line is 54 inches in Fargo and 48 in Bismarck.

The houses are the market. Depending on the county, between one in twenty and one in eight houses date from before 1940, and the rest are the Fargo, West Fargo, and Bismarck subdivisions of the 1970s onward, where the first vinyl is finished.
