Weather is what a siding company in New Hampshire sells against, and the state gets more of it than almost anywhere. The winters run long enough to test every seam, the ice storm of December 2008 put 422,000 homes in the dark and worked at every loose panel in the state, and the summers are humid enough to rot wood from the bottom course up. Vinyl owns the market on price and on the freeze and thaw. Fiber cement is gaining in Bedford, Windham, and the Seacoast towns, where the newer houses are stone on the front and siding on the rest, and on the 18 miles of coast the salt air eats fasteners, so stainless is the spec.

The older houses are the other half of the market. The Capes and colonials of Nashua and Manchester and the farmhouses of the Monadnock region have cedar clapboard under whatever went over them, so a full tear-off is the normal job, and a partial job lives or dies on matching what is already there. New Hampshire has no deductible statute and no roofing-specific claim law, so siding on a claim runs on the general rules, and the one that always applies is the door-to-door sales law.

New Hampshire licenses nothing in this trade. There is no state license and no registration for a siding company, and the Attorney General's office says so in its own consumer alerts. What the state does have is the Consumer Protection Act, with its multiple damages and attorney's fees, and the door-to-door law, which gives the homeowner until midnight of the third business day to cancel any sale of $25 or more made at the house, in ten-point bold type next to the signature.

The State Building Code applies everywhere, and whether a re-side is inspected depends on whether the town has a building inspector, which many of the small ones do not. The season runs from April into October. Vinyl gets brittle below freezing, and the New Hampshire winter stops a crew for months.
