Iowa is a frame-house state, and that makes siding a bigger share of the exterior work here than in the brick states to the east. The 1950s to 1970s ranches in Des Moines, Cedar Rapids, and the Quad Cities went up in wood and got aluminum or hardboard over it in the decades since, and a lot of that is coming off now. Vinyl is the volume replacement, and steel siding has a real following in Iowa in a way it does not in most of the country, because it stands up to hail and wind. Siding contractors register with the Division of Labor once the business earns $2,000 a year. The fee is $50 and there is no exam. A company based outside Iowa posts a $25,000 bond, and having a branch office in the state does not change that.

Cold weather shapes the schedule. Vinyl gets brittle below freezing and the cuts get ragged, so most crews stop by late November and start again in April. The freeze and thaw finds every place water can get behind a panel, which is why house wrap and the flashing at every window get looked at closely.
