Rain is the reason an Oregon gutter company exists west of the Cascades, and the numbers are the pitch. Portland gets 36 inches a year, most of it from October to April, Astoria gets close to 60, and Tillamook gets more than 70. A gutter here carries water all winter, so the sizing is for volume. Six-inch gutters and oversized downspouts go on any big roof, and the downspouts run to a drain line or a splash block well away from the foundation, because a wet crawl space is the Willamette Valley disease.

Then the trees fill them. Douglas fir drops needles all year, and needles go through guards made for leaves. Big-leaf maple drops leaves the size of dinner plates in November. Moss grows in a gutter that holds water and shade, and in Oregon it does. The guards that sell are the fine mesh ones, and a company that offers cleaning twice a year has a customer for life.

Ice does the damage. The storm that began on January 12, 2024 coated Lane County and the Portland area in ice, left parts of Lane County dark for weeks, and killed at least eight people in Multnomah County. The February 2021 storm put more than 350,000 customers in the dark and took down 5,000 lines. Ice in a gutter weighs more than the hangers were spaced for, and the January thaw is when the calls come. East of the mountains, in Bend and Redmond, the snow that slides off a metal roof takes the gutter with it unless snow guards hold it back. Oregon has no roofing-specific deductible law.

Oregon licenses every contractor through the Construction Contractors Board, and a gutter company carries a bond and insurance like everyone else, $20,000 and $300,000 per occurrence as a residential specialty contractor, after 16 hours of training and the state exam. A job under $1,000 that is casual and minor is exempt, and a company that advertises loses even that. Any residential job over $2,000 goes in a written contract with the CCB's notices, and a sale made in the home can be cancelled until midnight of the third business day. Seamless aluminum in five and six inch K-style is most of the work, formed on site from coil, and the work runs all year on the west side because the rain does.
