Ice is the reason a lot of gutter work exists in Massachusetts, and the winter of 2015 is the reason everyone knows it. More than 110 inches of snow fell on Boston that season, 64.8 inches in February alone, and the ice dams that followed put water through ceilings across the state and tore gutters off with the ice. A gutter carrying an inch of ice in a January wind pulls hangers out of the fascia, and ice dams form above any poorly insulated ceiling, which on the second oldest housing stock in the country is most of them. Heavy-duty hangers spaced tight are a normal spec, and the guards that survive are the ones that stay put under ice.
Rain and wind do the rest. The nor'easters of January and March 2018 flooded the coast from Newburyport to Scituate, the nor'easter of October 2025 put 45 to 55 mile an hour gusts on the Cape, and microbursts took gutters off with the trees in Beverly and Belchertown in July 2025. Six-inch gutters and oversized downspouts are a normal spec on a big colonial. Where the water goes matters too, because Massachusetts houses have basements, and a downspout that dumps beside a fieldstone foundation on the North Shore ends up in the basement. Downspout extensions are the first upsell in the trade and the one the customer thanks you for.
The trees keep the work coming. The oaks and maples fill gutters in a few weeks each fall, and the pitch pines on the Cape drop needles all year that slide through guards made for leaves. Seamless aluminum in five and six inch K-style is nearly all of the residential work, formed on site from coil, and the work runs from April into November.
