A gutter job is small enough that a lot of contractors treat it as a handshake, and in Indiana that is a mistake. The Home Improvement Contracts Act applies to any job over $150, which is nearly every gutter job, including a repair. The contract has to be in writing and has to carry the names and addresses of both parties, a description of the work, the price, and an estimated start and completion date, and the contractor signs it first. A gutter company doing three houses a day needs a contract that can be filled in and signed from the truck.

Hail is the reason a lot of gutter work exists here. Aluminum gutters dent, and after a spring storm in central or northern Indiana the dents along the front face are among the first things an adjuster photographs.
